Can I get Freeview & Saorview on a Saorview box in Tyrone, Northern Ireland

I'm looking for a good set top box which can receive all digital channels as well as the Irish channels such as BBC1, BBC2, RTE1, RTE2 etc. Does the Walker WP12DTB-R Saorview Box receive all these. I live in Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

Our answer;

this is an interesting question, but I think you should not really have a great difficulty in getting it to work.

The key information to understand is:

Different Standards
- UK Freeview uses MPEG2
- Irish Saorview uses MPEG4 & HD (MHEG5 middleware is important for teletext but not vital for picture or sound)
You will need 2 UHF Aerials
you will need a diplexer to combine the aerials into a single feed
you will need a Digital receiver which at a minimum is Mpeg4, Mpeg2 & HD compatible

Is there a kit that will do it all ?

We created the following Product for this.
- Note it may need to be slightly modified for you needs as it covers a range of possible Saorview transmitter in the Republic as well as Freeview transmitters in the North and in Wales
- Taken from the logic of someone in the Republic - but from the north it is the same except obviously you would need to use the power unit and masthead amplifier on UHF aerial that is aimed at the Saorview transmitter

- select the best Freeview Transmitter (normally the closest) for your

You can add a shipping note to modify the kit "please give a Group A Red tip and a Group B Aerial as part of kit"

NOTES

The selection will take a bit of thinking about and local knowledge
You can buy just the parts you need from the associated products
if in doubt you can use 2 Wideband UHF Aerials (will work on any set of transmitters)
You can buy a different receiver by selecting from
- Digital TV Receiver
The results are normally pretty good
