What is the new RTE Free To Air System Called

James asks;

What is the new RTE Free to Air system called?

Our answer;

We are asked this quite a bit and the short answer is Saorview. The reason for people's lack on knowledge on this subject seems to be a lack of promotion or advertising. This will change in the near future as the analogue TV signal is due to be turned off in 2012 and there will be mass promotion of this so people should become more familiar with subject at that point.

In the meantime, Saorview is Ireland's new Digital TV service. It was turned on officially on October 2010. It currently covers well over 90% of the country. What it will mean is much better reception for the majority of people and going forward the broadcast of our domestic Irish channels in HD.

Currently you can get 6 channels - The RTEs, TV3, TG4, 3e and RTEs rolling news channel.

To get Saorview you will need either an Mpeg4 HDTV or an Mpeg4 and HD compatible Digital TV receiver. You will also need a Digital TV Aerial.

You could also use a Digital Satellite Combo Box to get bother the Irish Domestic channels & the free UK Satellite TV channels for the best of both worlds

Have a look at our range of Digital TV products and see what suits you best. There are detailed user guides, technical pages and videos on the subject.
