USES of USB Over Network Adapter / Extender

  • Used to extend the working range of USB cables
  • Ideal for long runs through walls
  • Use with USB printers, scanners, webcams, cameras, mice & keyboards

ADVANTAGES of USB Over Network Adapter / Extender

  • Can extend the working range of up to 4 USB devices up to 50m
  • Normal working range of USB 2.0 cables is 5m & USB 3.0 is 3m, so the advantages are clear

DISADVANTAGES of USB Over Network Adapter / Extender

  • It operates over CAT5e / CAT6 using USB specification 1.1, which has a max transfer rate of 12Mbps
  • It is a point to point USB over CAT5 adapter and must be run directly
  • It cannot operate in conjunction with a router or network switch
  • USB has a max. power output and this will apply here also
  • For example, don't expect to connect a few USB powered external hard drives and expect them to work
    • They will be drawing too much current in this example
  • Think simple and low power
    • A mouse, keyboard & memory stick
    • That type of setup should work OK
  • Alternatively using mains powered external hard drives and using the USB over ethernet extenders for transferring data should work OK too
  • It's the power requirements you need to watch out for rather than the data transfer aspect
