Uses of CAT6 Cables

Used primarily

  • In server rooms / patch rooms
  • To connect up patch panels
  • To connect PC / Laptop to wall plates
  • To connect PC / Laptop directly to router or switch

Advantages of CAT6 Cables

  • They are low cost
  • Their long length cover a very large CAT6 run
  • Are compatible with gigabit networks
  • Are backward compatible with older networks
  • Unterminated means it's easier to pull through walls and ducting
  • Can be cut to desired length
  • In pure material terms, unterminated CAT6 cable is cheaper then buying pre-terminated cables

Disadvantages CAT6 Cables

The main disadvantages are that

  • May be too long for some jobs, might need to cut
  • CAT6 cables are slighlty more expensive than CAT5 cables
