Can I use Series Link on Edision Argus VIP2 Combo Receiver

John C asks & TV Trade answers;

I have recently canceled my Sky subscription and am considering the purchase of this item (x2).

My concern in No. 2 above is purely because I don't want to make a purchase to find out later that I have wasted my money.

Finally, you have an excellent website - very informative - best around.

Q1. If the record feature allows for recording directly from EPG (can I set a program to record which has not already started) and is there a facility for series link?

  • There is no series link option unfortunately If you want non subscription Free satellite TV then what you need is actually called a Freesat box. These are the closest thing to a Sky+ box on the market and allow you to get all the free UK satellite TV channels. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a Freesat/Saorview combo box. It would really be the magic bullet solution that everyone wants but our population is too small for companies to put their time and money into developing this type of box.
  • Yes you should be able to mark a programme for recording using the EPG (will work well with Irish Digital TV (7 day EPG) but Free to Air Satellite's EPG is only now and next so not so good there. This is the nature of all free to air satellite systems. What ever way the data is encrypted or transmitted, it only shows now and next. Some free to air boxes however let you record in the future by setting time stamps rather than simply selecting a programme. i.e. Record 11am - 12-30pm.
Q2. If for some reason Saorview settings/technology changes in May and I can no longer receive the service having purchased this item, can I return it and receive a refund?
  • We allow people to change their mind within 7 days of purchase for a full refund without quibble - but we do offer a full 12 month warranty on the box (providing the firmware has not been altered with unofficial versions from the internet).
  • The one issue that the boxes do not comply with is the MHEG5 middleware which affects digital teletext on the Irish HD channels. The limits of this are clearly spelt out in relevant video.
  • Note - there is no combo box currently on the market which complies with Saorview standards. When there is one we will add it. We will not be adding anything from Walker as they are simply resellers for a Turkish manufacturer. Edision are by a mile the best combo box on the market but they do come with the above limits which we do our best to highlight rather than hide unlike other competitors. We feel that we provide so much free information both the good and bad of all our products that the buyer can be well informed when making a purchase. No other online Digital & Satellite TV shop puts as much effort into this area of their business than we do
