How to Configure your Router for Port Forwarding

Note: This is only shown using a grey type eircom router. This tutorial is predicated on the fact that you have already obtained a static IP address from your broadband provider. These can be obtained easily and are relatively inexpensive and in some cases actually free. To see how to implement port forwarding on your particular make and model of router, you need to go to a website called portforward.com

You will also need to find out what the default IP address, user logon and password for your particular make and model is. This will be in the documentation that is provided with your router. Your broadband provider may also provide you with it if you contact them. Again, the website portforward.com is a goldmine of information in this regard.

On the grey type eircom router

  • Type 192.168.1.254 into your URL bar
  • Click on Expert mode
  • Go to Configure
  • Click on Advanced
  • Click on NAT (may be called Port Forwarding on some routers)
  • Click on Define custom service
  • Leave Port Forwarding ticked and click on next
  • Enter the following;
    • Service name: (can be whatever you like)
    • Global port range: 8100 - 8100
    • Base host port: 80 (use 81or 82 if it is already taken)
    • Protocol: TCP
  • Click on next
  • Click done
  • Select the service name you created from the dropdown list and then click on enable
  • Select the IP of your DVR that yout set previously from the dropdown list
  • Port forwarding is now set up
