Could you recommend a TV booster that I could boost the my TV signal which I am running to rooms

Charlie asks;

Could you recommend a TV booster that I could boost the my TV signal which I am running to rooms?

Tv Trade's answer;

When people use TV boosters they are normally trying to do 2 things

  • Boost the strength of the signal
  • Split the signal to multiple locations (or rather split it without killing the picture quality)

Choosing the Right TV booster for your TV Aerial

The first step is ensure that you have all the basics done right such to avoid the Causes of Poor TV reception. Then it is down to choosing one of the option below:

1a. TV Distribution Amplifier (standard)

This is far the most popular and cost effective option. These powered TV Distribution Amplifier simply take the feed from the TV Aerial(s) and boosts the output signal by 14-18dB . When your signal is marginal it can have dramatic effects.

  • They come in a range of sizes 2, 4, 6 & 8 - distributing TV signal to multiple rooms.
  • They come with Coaxial connectors inputs

1b. TV Distribution Amplifier (with Sky return)

This variation is used really only when the TV cable is both carrying a Signal from a TV aerial and also from a Sky box which works a sky eye. It is essential to use an amplifier which has 'a return path' - to allow the signal pass back to the sky box from the sky eye.

  • Again come distribution amplifiers comes in a range of sizes 2, 4, 6 & 8 - distributing TV signal to multiple rooms.
  • They come withinputs of F connectors
  • Cost about 20-25% more than the standard Distribution Amplifier

2. TV Aerial - Mast Head Amplifiers

An alternative approach to boosting a TV signal is to actually amplify the TV aerial itself so that it pulls in a better TV signal. The kit will be made up of 2 things

The key points are:

  • In brief the power unit provides the power for the Masthead amplifier to power up the TV aerial
  • This can be a more effective may of improving TV reception but is more technically challenging (though by no means impossible).
  • It is possible to split the output to multiple rooms using power passing splitters
