Can I get Saorview & Freeview in Tipperary

Kieran asks;

I live in Templemore, Co Tipperary and am just wondering will I be able to pick up both the Saorview & Freeview signals here as I find it very difficult to get a strong enough gain on the UHF signal for saorview, never mind Freeview?

Our answer;

you have pretty much zero chance of getting freeview in Templemore.

Why not?

  • Because you are not near the coast or the border so you will not be able to pick up signal from a UK based Freeview transmitter.
  • Also to know the difference Freeview vs Freesat (which will work anywhere in Ireland) go to
  • Difference between free to air, Freesat and Freeview

Where in Ireland would UK Freeview be an option?

Go to:

  • how to combine freeview and saorview
    • You will see from the map that there are 3 transmitters in the north of Ireland and 2 in Wales which give a certain footprint in the Republic which means that it should be possible to pick up the service along the East coast & along the border with Northern Ireland.
    • The ideal situation is where both the UK & Irish channels can be received on a single MPEG4 HD Digital Terrestrial receiver. In many areas this is not possible simple because the Saorview & Freeview transmitters are working on the same frequencies and the signal can not be combined.

So can how can I get the Irish & UK channels on a single receiver?

The ideal solution is to use a combo receiver

  • which will take the Irish (Saorview) channels on from a UHF aerial
  • & the UK channels from a satellite dish

It is possible buy this receiver as a kit

  • combo receiver kit
    • Even if you have some of the component parts e.g. an old sky dish - you can just buy the items you need from the Associated products on the right of the the Kit.
